Why 3U and 6U Dominate Commercial LEO Constellations#

While 1U CubeSats and 1P PocketQubes excel at beacons, educational payloads, and low-power IoT relays, optical Earth observation (EO) and atmospheric sounding are governed by aperture diameter and orbit-average DC power[1][2]. By extending the Z-axis to 340.5 mm (3U) or doubling the cross-section to 226.3 × 100 mm (6U), spacecraft can accommodate an 85–90 mm Cassegrain telescope, 3-axis + star trackers, deployable 20–60 W solar arrays, and an X-band transmitter.

Diffraction-Limited Ground Sample Distance#

At orbital altitude and wavelength , an aperture of diameter has a Rayleigh angular resolution , corresponding to a nadir diffraction floor of [3].
